The “1st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Cultural Festival”, co-organized by China Theatre Association, China-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Association and Hong Kong Tai Kung Wen Wei Media Group, was successfully held on November 5, assembling renowned Chinese opera masters to celebrate the legacy of Chinese traditional art. 


The Opening Ceremony was inaugurated by Ao Ieong U, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, who represented the Chief Executive, Wang Dong, Acting Commissioner of Commissioner’s Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Kou Hoi In, Macao deputy to the Chinese National People’s Congress and President of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Chen Yan, Secretary of the Leading Party Member’s Group of China Theatre Association, Zhu Hong, Deputy Director of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Meng Guanglu, National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice President of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and Alvin Chau, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Suncity Group, as well as honourable guests, experiencing the traditional Chinese opera culture and the national treasure with other audiences.


According to the organizers, as the first joint exhibition of Chinese opera, the festival utilizes Macao as the platform to reveal the unique charm of Chinese opera to countries along the “Belt and Road Initiative” and Portuguese-speaking countries, enhance the cultural exchange between cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, it further facilitates the integration of culture and tourism, thus rejuvenating the sectors and propelling Macao’s economic recovery.


On the occasion of inauguration, a total of five mesmerizing operas were performed, capturing the attention of all audiences. 


Alvin Chau, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Suncity Group stated, “With its sophistication and long history, the traditional Chinese culture forms the basis of Macao’s diverse culture. The strategic positioning of Macao as a base for exchange and cooperation in the ‘Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’ is not just an affirmation of Macao as an important hub in the “Belt and Road Initiative”. It is also an expectation for Macao to utilize its unique advantages in enhancing the development of the culture sectors of the Greater Bay Area and promoting traditional Chinese culture to other countries. I believe, through the success of this ‘1st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Cultural Festival’, Macao can promote to its younger generations the traditional Chinese culture and patriotism, reinforce national self-confidence and the cultural identity of the Chinese while enhancing the diversification of its economy. As always, I will continue to leverage on my strength in promoting the spectacular traditional culture of the Chinese.”


From November 6 to 9, the leading masters from Tianjin Youth Beijing Opera Troupe, Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, Henan Opera Troupe No. 2 and Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Courtyard gathered, bringing to the city an extravaganza and showcasing the quintessence of Chinese opera. 


With sponsoring “1st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Cultural Festival”, Suncity Group aims to support the conservation and dissemination of traditional Chinese culture, deepen the cultural exchanges between cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, introduce to the world the diversification of long-established Chinese arts, as well as to further transform the Chinese Opera into a new tourism attraction of Macao, thereby promoting the development of economic and entertainment sector in the city.
